Hourly Parks & Recreation Administration Intern

Wage: $11.00 per hour

Variable hours up to 20 hours per week, may include occasional events and weekends

Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM

Duration: August 13– December 13

The city of Iowa City is seeking a highly motivated and driven individual for a Parks & Recreation Administration Intern position for the 2018 fall semester. This position offers challenging assignments to undergraduate or graduate students, enhancing their understanding of policy, budget, marketing and leadership aspects of a municipal Parks & Recreation Department. This intern will assist in the development of Iowa City Parks & Recreation Foundation fundraising strategy, prepare research for policy review and development, assist with department budget review, observe Capital Projects in progress and assist with department marketing and branding. Assists the Iowa City Parks & Recreation Director in policy, planning, budgeting, and administrative tasks during the 2018 fall semester. Researches models of similar Parks & Recreation Foundations and similar entities. Assists Parks & Recreation Director in policy research for a variety of Parks & Recreation related procedures, rules, and facility standards. Assists in preparing department messaging and promotion materials including social media, press releases, flyers, and department brochure. Must be able to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities and meet deadlines with little supervision, and be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary. Attends committee meetings for special projects. Attends board meetings, staff meetings and Council meetings as requested. Reviews budget procedures and other administrative duties. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum education, experience and certification

College coursework or comparable work experience in Parks & Recreation, Public Administration, Non-Profit Management, Urban Planning or closely related field required. Requires a highly motivated individual who is creative, detail oriented with the ability to multi-task, with a positive, engaging outlook, excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Requires above average computer skills with extensive experience in social media and Microsoft Office applications. Must work well independently and have the ability to work a flexible schedule, with hours during weekends or after hours, as needed, based on event and project schedules. Must present a professional appearance, demeanor and attitude. Requires the ability to work with a broad spectrum of groups and must be committed to maintaining the highest sensitivity to professional ethics and cultural diversities, treating all people equally and respectfully. A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check.
