The Red Cross shared that the correct dates for LGIT are below. A new PDF will be available from them soon.

    WSIT Academy March 6 – 10, 2023
    LGIT Academy March 21 – 24, 2023

Iowa City is close to being approved as a site (contract is signed, just need councils approval) but we need 6 people in the state to hold a LGIT (or WSIT or both!) class in Iowa City. Once we are approved to be a site we’re only valid for 2 years.

I’d love to see a large group submit by the end of March so we can go to them and show we have a need and then work together to get a class on the books.

Please check out the requirements and let me know if you have any questions –

Note: there IS a section where you can ask for special approval if you do not meet the requirements but your job title/role may require it. Please look into that if you do not meet the LGI minimums, especially.

    Hi folks –

The Red Cross will host an academy in Iowa if we hit the 6-person minimum for approved IT applications for either LGIT or WSIT (or both – separately).

To do this they need approved IT applications on file with folks who are in Iowa.

You can learn about the process of applying here: https://www.redcrosslearningcenter.org/s/instructor-trainer-candidates

The application is valid for 1 year once you are approved.

We have a lot of upcoming LGI and WSI classes in Iowa City and I’d be willing to work with anyone on dates if they needed other options and could come to us. There are also some WSIT and LGITs that travel throughout the state to teach that may be able to bring a class near/to you.

Keep in mind that if you don’t have the requirements needed for WSIT or LGIT you can ask for an exception due to your job position as an aquatics professional. Email me if you have any other Q’s – I’m happy to talk through this as I’d like to see another group of WSIT/LGITs in the state!

    Hi Amy –

I’m happy to chat with you about this via email or phone (kate-connell@iowa-city.org).

The main policy to have is to let folks decide which locker room/bathroom/bathing suit is appropriate for them and their gender and to train staff to support that decision if it’s questioned by other patrons.

Lots more we can chat about if your Q is more specific.

We hire them as seasonal if they’re seasonal (we also have variable/year-round staff – this depends on hours allowed to work and intension with length of employment – they need to pick one or the other and can’t switch).
We ask for an email of resignation for all quits/terms – sometimes I need to track this down. I also term all of our seasonals on the same day and send them a huge email with details about end of season/term/rehiring.

We’re limiting to just lap swim but not to IC only. I have seen some other places limit to just their town (Ankeny for example) or school district (Vinton for example).

We’re allowing our affiliate team to rent a few lanes during our reservation-based lap swim time. They’re allowed 2-4 lanes depending on the time slot and will be charged per lane as patrons are. Here’s the doc we sent them.
